Yak Down Fibre

Yak down is a relatively new fiber in western markets.  For centuries Tibetans have been using the coarser “guard” hair of the yaks to braid ropes and weave material for their nomad tents.  The yaks also produce a fine down undercoat that keeps them warm in the subzero temperatures of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

These down fibers have an average micron count of 15-18 and are comparable in softness to cashmere or camel down.  Yak down is hypoallergenic and won’t itch like sheep wool and other coarser fibers.

Warm and breathable, this luxury fiber can be spun into a beautifully soft yarn. We use 100% Tibetan Yak Down in all of our yarns and garments.

Yarn

Our Traditional Series yarn is made with 100% Tibetan yak down fiber and is hand-spun by Tibetan women living on the Tibetan Plateau.  We strive to keep this yarn as traditional and natural as possible.

Our Snow Mountain Series yarn is made from the same beautiful fiber as our hand-spun yarn. Because this yarn is machine-spun rather than hand-spun it has a more consistent gauge.
